This is from my understanding:

1. The US wanted the missiles out of cuba and to try to force cuban government to get rid of them by a blockade. Since cuba relies heavily on imported goods.

2. The USSR wanted missiles out of turkey, so they put their own missiles in cuba to force the US into a deal.

Both nations accomplished their goals.
