Why does Vonnegut think that ending the book with Edgar Derby's death would be ironic?

English

Vonnegut thinks that climactic end of the book with Derby's shooting would be ironical since Elgar was a kind and just man who did not deserved to die.

Explanation:

The Slaughterhouse-Five storyline revolves amidst world war and its climactic endings. In the story, a strong emphasis has been put on Tralfamadorian philosophy. With the death of each of the phrase “So it goes” appears meaning the relative presence of a person in a moment and absence in another.

Hence, in the story Vonnegut not only dismisses the conventional climactic story structure which would probably end in the shooting of Elgar Derby who was otherwise a kind and just man. He was to receive the punishment for a petty mistake of being caught with a teapot. However, the destiny prevails and “so it goes” meaning that Justice does not prevail in death.

Which of the following is not an example of situational irony?
maxonik [38]

Answer:

D. A teacher running right into a door and falling on her face

Explanation:

Situational irony is a situation, outcome or an action that happens although that was unexpected from the known facts or premises.

It is completely unexpected for an experienced Olympic diver to make such a beginner's mistake and do the belly flop.

We could say the same for an 80- year old lady to be familiar with modern technologies, let alone use them and be a part of it.

Also, a ridiculously short man winning a high-jump competition is a rather unexpected outcome.

However, a teacher running right into a door and falling is simply a painful accident, because teachers aren't in any way less prone to accidents nor it is expected of them to never accidentally injure themselves.

4. What excuse does Lady Macbeth give for Macbeth's behavior at the party?
andre [41]
[D]

Lady Macbeth: Sit down, worthy friends. My husband is often like this, and he has been since he was a child. Please stay seated. This is just a brief fit. In a moment he’ll be well again. If you pay too much attention to him you’ll make him angry, and that will make his convulsions go on longer. Eat your dinner and pay no attention to him.
