King James I noticed that the colonies were a great source of income to the UK, with that he started taxing them.

First, in 1651 he issued the Navigation Acts that regulated colonial trade and made able England collect taxes in the colonies. Next, he imposed the Tariff of 1661, that imposed taxes on the importation of goods from other countries.

In 1673 the Plantation Duty Act made the plantations trade exclusively with England, it also taxed tobacco.

After a series of taxes King James I imposed to the 13 colonies, the colonies started the motto “no taxation without representation”, they sought representation before they were taxed.
