I believe it to be important because understanding the English language and vocabulary can help you in multiple aspects of your life. Using contextual clues and reference materials allows you to practice every day needed skills such as reading, writing, and understanding. Lets use history as an example. Those who could not read or write often had limited roles in high positions. This is because these skills are needed to do most activities.
