My journey to western California in the 1800's by wagon. We write a letter to a friend in the East, encouraging or discouraging them to making the same trip.

Letter to family

Here in California, the news of gold brought in approximately 300,000 people. The sudden influx of gold into the money supply reinvigorated the American economy, and the sudden increase in population allowed California to quickly become a state.
The Gold Rush had severe effects on Native Californians and accelerated the decline of the Native American population from disease, famine, and the California genocide.
You can come to California to find gold, but you have to know that there are many criminals here.
With this letter, we talk about the reality of the gold rush and show the pros and cons of this trip.

In reality the [peace] policy rested on the belief that Americans had the right to dispossess Native peoples of their lands, take away freedoms, and send them to reservations, where missionaries would teach them how to farm, read and write, wear Euro-American clothing, and embrace Christianity. If Indians refused to move to reservations, they would be forced off their homelands by soldiers.
Answer:
Liberia successfully resisted colonization because of an alliance with the United States.
Explanation:
The Republic of Liberia is an West African state that declared its independence in 1847. It was founded by free blacks and freed black slaves who emigrated from the United States, feeling that by returning to their African homeland they would fare better than in the US, where slavery and racism were still common and widespread. Still, it remained closely linked to the US and was modelled after it. Liberia was unique amongst African nations as it was a settler colony created by blacks from outside Africa. Because of its unique origin and close alliance to the US, it was able resist colonization by the Europeans, although Liberia still lost several territories to the UK and France that it claimed as its own. Nevertheless, by the turn of the 20th century, Liberia and Ethiopia were the only independent African countries, while the rest of the continent had been divided amongst the European imperialist powers.
