He hunts human beings as a game, an entertainment, for he no longer views the hunting of animals as exciting enough. The passage in the question is from when Rainsford and the General first met each other. Through his admission of having read all kinds of hunting books in different languages, we can know that General Zaroff is a well- educated man.
