The Revolution of 1989 as it is called, ended the Communist rule in Hungary. It is called Rendszerváltás (or system change). Several other former communist countries and the west were putting pressure on Hungary to Westernize. The economic and social pressure ended up with the dissolving the Communist Gov't and forming a democracy. The first free election took place in 1990. The Communist party fell into oblivion for a while until the rise of the alt-right and alt-left parties in the late 2000's.
