McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) is one of the first and most important Supreme Court cases on federal power. In this case, the Supreme Court held that Congress has implied powers derived from those listed in Article I, Section 8. The “Necessary and Proper” Clause gave Congress the power to establish a national bank.

The McCulloch v. Maryland 1819 case was one of the most if not the most important first cases on federal power in the United States. The significance of this case being the Supreme Court ruling that the Federal Government had the ability to pass laws not written in the Constitution, which gave the Federal Government a great authority over the states. This gave them the ability to be immune to state taxes of the national bank, specifically in the case of Maryland taxing the national bank.
