Subhas Chandra Bose was an Indian nationalist politician known for his struggle for the independence of his country, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi. Historically, it has stood out for its controversial political alliances with the Axis during the Second World War and the controversy surrounding its demise.

Unlike Mahatma Gandhi, a supporter of nonviolence, Chandra Bose believed in the need for armed struggle to liberate India. His differences with Gandhi led him to resign in 1939 and to found that same year a new nationalist party that demanded complete and immediate independence (instead of an autonomous phase of gradual transition). The British detained him up to 11 times. In January 1941 he refused his house arrest and went underground.
