Delegates from slave states wanted their slaves to count as population because? HELP ME!!

At that time the south wanted more votes to win against the north. so they wanted their slaves to count as population( population determined the number of votes) . in the ended up with the three/fifths compromise were 3 out of every 5 slaves counted towards a vote.
