The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo played a major role in confronting the government and ending the war.

The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo are an Argentine association formed during the dictatorship of Jorge Rafael Videla in order to recover the disappeared detainees alive; and then, to establish who was responsible for the crimes against humanity commited in their country, and promote their prosecution.

During the years of the Argentine military dictatorship they were constantly opposed to the measures taken by the government, suffering constant persecution, including kidnappings and disappearances. In 1979, they stopped demonstrating in the Plaza de Mayo due to repression, but from 1980 they continued to do so. In the first days of December of that year they made the first 'march of the resistance', consisting of walking around the square of Plaza de Mayo, in downtonwn Buenos Aires, for 24 hours.
