Overall, life in the West was much harder. For starters, the climate was extremely dry and hot, so it was hard to adapt when moving to Western lands. (Most people travelled by wagon, which was relatively easy along the flat terrain but got tricky when they arrived at the Rocky Mountains.) The harsh conditions meant there was a lot of work to be done. Every single person had a job to be done, and there was always some chore to do.
