The main plot of the short story is to show the reader not to take the small things for granted because at the end you won't even realize that's what you love doing the best. For example in the story it said "Her lifesaving courses had worked ," meaning she never thought they would come in handy because she thought that being a life guard was not exciting and nothing life changing would occur. Also the male figure in the story is a symbol of her life changing experience after she saves the little boy . Another thing is the setting of the pool area how it's all dramatic and everything moving fast and how she didn't stop to think on what to do and just took the plunge into the water acting quick on her feet to save a person she didn't know because that's what she had signed up for even though it tells us she was only there for the rides. In other words she's a guarding angel and now knows that taking risks is something she enjoys .
The first quote talks about how people won’t realise what they have until it’s gone, as suggested by “some day you wil love me, but I won’t love you” The repetition of “some day“ shows that the narrator has no clue of when this will happen but is certain that it will at some point.
The second quotation has a similar theme to the previous quote in which the subject of the quote didn’t realise what they had until it was gone or in this specific case the narrator “moved on” The use of emotive language “cared” “hurt and “cried’ makes the reader seem sympathetic for the narrator and is to some extent character development on both the subject and the narrator.
The third quote is slightly different. This quotation talks about sensory language and how you can stop yourself from seeing things but you can’t force your heart to not feel. ”close your heart to the things you don’t want to feel” is used to affect the readers emotions and make them understand the narrators thoughts.

This is because the author likens the forest to the unseen and naturally Goodman Brown expresses his distrust and fear as he cautiously enters it. The forest reflects the views of the 17th century Puritans who initially feared the forest but then also wanted to dominate it once they had overcome their fears. Goodman Brown also sees the Devil himself in the forest.
