In "A Worn Path", Old Phoenix Jackson was able to hit the dog her cane before falling into a ditch. She waits until a young white hunter shows up and helps her out of the ditch. He is demeaning at first about her age, then shows prejudice because he says “I know you old colored people…wouldn’t miss going to town to see Santa Claus!”

She sees a nickel has fallen out of the hunter's pocket, and before taking it, she distracts him by saying that his big black dog isn't afraid of anything. Not only does he chase it off to prove her wrong, but also points a gun at her at an attempt to assert power.

Phoenix Jackson, or an old African-American woman on "A Worn path" who wanders into the city.

Further Explanation

In the story "The road is worn out", an old woman named Phoenix Jackson said on a cold day in December.

Phoenix Jackson, or an old African-American woman on "A Worn path" who wanders into the city. She has a wrinkled face and shoes that are not tied.

The character of Phoenix Jackson is an old African-American woman who uses a thin little stick made of umbrellas to touch the ground that helps her walk.

The paths give way to the city, which is decorated for Christmas and filled with people who are crowded by Phoenix as they conduct their business.

After this, she found a dog, who barked at her. She hit the dog with her stick and she herself fell into the ditch.

She met a hunter, pocketed the nickel he dropped.

Finally, she arrived at a stone building and climbed the stairs. The receptionist asked her lots of questions. Then a nurse came and asked a question to Phoenix. Phoenix replied that her granddaughter had throat problems.

Fortunately, a nurse recognized Phoenix immediately as a grandmother who often traveled long distances to the city to get medicine for her grandson who was suffering from alkali poisoning.

The doctor asks the nurse to give Phoenix medicine.

The story ends with Phoenix arriving in the city after completing the journey. Finally, she brought medicine and returned home.

Her motivation for doing so was also revealed when she regretted how her grandson swallowed alkali which damaged his throat. She traveled to get medicine for her grandchildren who had a sore throat.

Phoenix decided that she would buy her grandson a paper windmill to take home with her with the medicine.
