Remark

Drawing that diagram was a very good idea. If you can picture something happening, you are half way there. I tend to use a table, but the diagram will come to the same thing.

                  Olivia                    Dawn

Start            176                         80

<u>Donate         x                             x      Subtract</u>

What's left   176 - x                  80 - x

Equation

176 - x = 5*(80 - x)     Olivia had 5 times as many books as Dawn did.   Remove the brackets.

Solution

176 - x = 400 - 5x                 Add 5x to both sides

176 + 5x - x = 400                  Combine terms on the left

176 + 4x = 400                    Subtract 176 from both sides

4x = 400 - 176                     Combine terms on the right.

4x = 224                              Divide by 4

x = 224/4

x = 56                                 Answer

7x+16=8x+15 solve for x and y
elena55 [62]

Answer:

x = 1

Step-by-step explanation:

7x + 16 = 8x + 15

<u>Step 1</u> : Subtract 15 on both sides

7x + 16 - 15 = 8x

7x + 1 = 8x

<u>Step 2</u> : Subtract 7x on both sides

1 = 8x - 7x

1 = 1x

x = 1

Divide. Express the quotient in simplest form.<br> x^2−x−12/2x^2÷x^2+x−6/2x^3
sertanlavr [38]
Hey there!

These are technically expressed as fraction. When you divide a fraction by another, you can replace the second fraction with its reciprocal and you can now multiply the fractions together instead.

\frac{x^2-x-12}{2x^2} /  \frac{x^2+x-6}{2x^3}

\frac{x^2-x-12}{2x^2} * \frac{2x^3}{x^2+x-6}

Now, just multiply across the top and the bottom. You can first cancel out any terms that are repeated or similar.

\frac{12}{2x^2} * \frac{2x^3}{-6}

\frac{2}{x} * \frac{1}{-1}

\frac{2}{-x}

Your answer will be \frac{2}{-x}.

Hope this helped you out! :-)
