In this lab, biology students were directed to use indicators as chemical detection tools, to analyze a variety of foods for the

presence of carbohydrates, lipids or proteins. They preformed a specific test for carbohydrates, a Benedict test. The results for the presence of glucose can be seen here. Students wanted to use the same test for a variety of other carbohydrates. The test would work for all BUT ONE of the carbohydrates listed here.

The bilayer is structured in such a way that it complements the extracellular fluid around the cell as well as the cytoplasm within the cell. This is because the extracellular fluid is hydrophillic, the outside of the membrane protein is hydrophillic, the middle of the membrane protein is hydrophobic, the inside of the cell (the cytoplasm) is hydrophillic and the inside of the membrane protein is hydrophillic.
