January 12, 2010, became a dark day for Haitians. This region was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 Richter scale with the epicenter 16 km from Port-au-Prince and the epicenter at a depth of 10 km.

This earthquake was also felt in the Gulf of Guantánamo, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and the other regions around. The earthquake in Haiti caused serious damage because of the big primary earthquake, and 38 aftershocks also rocked the region.

This earthquake caused damage in the cities of Haiti such as Port-au-Prince, Leogane, Gressier, Grand Goave, Petit Goave, and Jacmel in the South East. It consisted of damage to infrastructure and a large number of deaths. According to World Vision Australia data, the number of death people reached 316,000 and damaged housing reached 250,000 units.
