How has human activity such as livestock overgrazing effected the Sahel
Bas_tet [7]

The livestock overgrazing of the Sahel resulted in desertification.

Explanation:

The Sahel is a region roughly stretching in an east to west direction. It separates the Sahara Desert on the north, and the steppes and savannas on the south. This region is semi-arid, being dominated by short grasses that are well adapted to prolonged periods of drought.

There a re people that live in this region, and thus there are human activities. Some of the prime human activities is the farming of livestock. The livestock needs grazing, and considering that it needs it constantly, an area that doesn't provide lot of food like the Sahel, is not able to sustain that. That contributes to overgrazing, which in turn contributes to desertification of the Sahel, so the Sahara Desert is gradually moving southwards.

The Sahel occupies territory in the countries:

  • Senegal
  • Mauritania
  • Burkina Faso
  • Mali
  • Niger
  • Nigeria
  • Chad
  • Sudan
  • Eritrea

The Mammoth Plateau near Mammoth Cave National Park is higher in elevation than the surrounding landscape and separates the Sink
Nady [450]

Answer:

Precipitation infiltrates into the subsurface via sinkholes and flows through subterranean passages to the Green River Valley.

Explanation:

Precipitation: The greatest factor controlling infiltration is the amount and characteristics (intensity, duration, etc.) of precipitation that falls as rain or snow. Precipitation that infiltrates into the ground often seeps into streambeds over an extended period of time.

As precipitation infiltrates into the subsurface soil, it generally forms an unsaturated zone and a saturated zone. In the unsaturated zone, the voids—that is, the spaces between grains of gravel, sand, silt, clay, and cracks within rocks—contain both air and water. Although a lot of water can be present in the unsaturated zone, this water cannot be pumped by wells because it is held too tightly by capillary forces.

The upper part of the unsaturated zone is the soil-water zone. The soil zone is crisscrossed by roots, openings left by decayed roots, and animal and worm burrows, which allow the precipitation to infiltrate into the soil zone.

Water in the soil is used by plants in life functions and leaf transpiration, but it also can evaporate directly to the atmosphere. Below the unsaturated zone is a saturated zone where water completely fills the voids between rock and soil particles.

How important is the ignorance of a flood plain in terms of the cause of the problem?
neonofarm [45]

Flood plains are areas adjacent to rivers, ponds, lakes, and oceans that are periodically flooded at different points in time. Floodplains are hydrologically important, environmentally sensitive, and ecologically productive areas that perform many natural functions. They contain both cultural and natural resources that are of great value to society. Flooding occurs naturally along every river and coastal areas. Flood waters can carry nutrient-rich sediments which contribute to a fertile environment for vegetation. Floodplains are beneficial for wildlife by creating a variety of habitats for fish and other animals. In addition, floodplains are important because of storage and conveyance, protection of water quality, and recharge of groundwater.
