They colonized to make a profit. King James the First formed the Virginia Company with a charter in 1606. It was a joint stock corporation that was supposed to settle Virginia. The king gave them the power to appoint the Governor, the Council of Virginia, and other officials. They also had the responsibility to give supplies and ship to settlers that would go and colonize for them.
