Because if you have negative attitudes and/or values that can be damaging, people will tend to be drawn away from that or be hesitant

Attitudes and values make for how you talk in a conversation. An attitude is sort of like opinions. Values are like standards. So if you got into a discussion about politics, your opinions and values may be way different, or similar to the person you are communicating with.
