The first line equation: y = -2/7x - 5; m1 = -7/2
The second line passes through (2,4) and is perpendicular to the first line.

Therefore,
The gradient of first line = -1/m1 = -1/(-2/7) = 7/2

Then, the equation of the  second line is;
y = 7/2x+b

Substituting for the coordinates given;
4 = 7/2(2)+b
4 = 7+b
b = 4-7 = -3

Therefore, the equation of the second line is;
y = 7/2x - 3

In standard form, the equation this equation can be written as:
y(2) = 7x - 3(2)
2y = 7x - 6
7x -2y - 6 = 0 -----> standard form.

Given that point A is the midpoint of line segment ED, where E( -1,9) and A(4,5), what is the location of point D?
yuradex [85]

Answer:

  D(9, 1)

Step-by-step explanation:

A being the midpoint means its coordinates satisfy ...

  A = (E + D)/2

Solving for D, we find ...

  D = 2A -E

  = 2(4, 5) -(-1, 9) = (2·4 +1, 2·5 -9)

  D = (9, 1)

How do you find the x intercepts of 3x^(5/3) - 4x^(7/3)
kaheart [24]
Set the whole expression = to 0 and solve for x.

3x^(5/3) - 4x^(7/3) = 0.  Factor out x^(5/3):     x^(5/3) [3 - 4x^(2/3)] = 0

Then either x^(5/3) = 0, or 3 - 4x^(2/3) = 0.

In the latter case, 4x^(2/3) = 3.

To solve this:  mult. both sides by x^(-2/3).  Then we have

4x^(2/3)x^(-2/3) = 3x^(-2/3),            or 4 = 3x^(-2/3).  It'd be easier to work with this if we rewrote it as

4           3
---  = --------------------
1            x^(+2/3)

Then

4
---  = x^(-2/3).  Then, x^(2/3) = (3/4), and x = (3/4)^(3/2).  According to my     3                      calculator, that comes out to x = 0.65 (approx.)

Check this result!  subst. 0.65 for x in the given equation.  Is the equation then true?

My method here was a bit roundabout, and longer than it should have been.  Can you think of a more elegant (and shorter) solution?
