Northern Colonies didn’t farm as heavily as the southern ones did hope this helps

The Northern Colonies were mostly located into mountains with a colder climate than the Southern Colonies. The Northern colonies also had a thin layer of soil that served only for subsistence farming. They were settled mostly for religious and political freedom.

The Southern colonies were located in plains, they had a warmer climate and rich fertile soil that was suited for cash crop farming. They were settled mostly for commercial gain.

Many went to Virginia because the southern colonies were based on agriculture which made many rich aristocrats or businessmen from England went there to grow cash crops so they could sell it to others.
