This great mountain range was <u>created by the clash between the Arab plate and the Eurasian plate</u> approximately 28 million years ago. Due to the constant movement of plates,<u> it is a region prone to continuous strong earthquakes</u> although it does not have volcanic activity despite the existence of some stratovolcanoes.
