Answer: A. Rome was a republic ruled by senators (wealthy landowners and elders) as well as the people.

Between 509 BC (end of the Kingdom) and 27 BC (beginning of the Empire), ancient Rome was a republic. During this period, Rome expanded and controlled the whole Mediterranean world. Its political organization was strongly influenced by that of Greek city-states. Rome was ruled by senators who oversaw the magistracies. The top magistrates were the two consuls. Although elections were held, the power remained in the hands of a small group of families.
