Pairs Warring states were defeated, and China was unified. - Qin dynasty - In the period between 256 and 221 B.C. Qin succeeded in ousting all its rivals, while at the same time reforming its own government institutions. The rulers of Qin espoused the political theories known as Legalism – a theory based on the belief that humans are undisciplined and can only be kept in order by fierce and harsh punishments. Unification came in 221 B.C when they were unified by China’s First Emperor, Shi Huangdi.

Confucianism strengthened and spread. - Han dynasty - The Han rulers put family members and trusted people in local government positions. They set up a system of tests to find the most educated and ethical people for the imperial bureaucratic state. To do this they tested individuals on their knowledge of Confucianism, contributing to its spread.

Written laws came into effect as a writing system developed. - Zhou dynasty - This marks the beginning of China’s recorded history, and we can rely on written sources. The Spring and Autumn period was also the time of the Hundred Schools of Thought—the golden age of Chinese philosophy. This was the period in which some of the most important Chinese philosophers lived, many of whom were patronized by the rulers of the small states that dominated China.
