King Henry VIII in the 1500's wanted a divorce from his first wife Catherine of Aragon. This was not allowed under the Catholic faith which was the leading faith of the time in England and the Pope would not agree to allow him to divorce. Therefore the King created his own church - The Church of England allowing him to divorce his wife and marry Anne Boleyn.
