I inferred you are referring to this excerpt from the text;

"Most people measure their happiness in terms of physical pleasure and material possession. Could they win some visible goal which they have set on the horizon, how happy they could be! Lacking this gift or that circumstance, they would be miserable. If happiness is to be so measured, I who cannot hear or see have every reason to sit in a corner with folded hands and weep. If I am happy in spite of my deprivations, if my happiness is so deep that it is a faith, so thoughtful that it becomes a philosophy of life, — if, in short, I am an optimist, my testimony to the creed of optimism is worth hearing."

Explanation:

The author here uses her personal experience of been deaf-blind to assert that an individual's happiness is not dependent on his or her circumstances. Helen says "I who cannot hear or see...I am happy in spite of my deprivations if my happiness is so deep that it is a faith, so thoughtful that it becomes a philosophy of life."

We notice her use of convincing language such as when she says "my testimony to the creed of optimism is worth hearing", this language gives her message a convincing feel.

Answer:

The purpose of the passage is to convey the idea that great suffering leads to happiness. Keller states that "most people measure their happiness in terms of…pleasure and material possession" or reaching some kind of "visible goal." She points out that if "happiness is to be so measured" then she "who cannot hear or see" would "have every reason to sit in a corner…and weep." However, she is "happy in spite of" her hardships and feels optimistic. She goes on to explain how once she felt hopeless and that "darkness lay on the face of all things" but that "love came and set my soul free" and now she knows "hope and joy." Keller’s language is meant to highlight the fact that Keller has not had the same advantages as others, yet she is still able to find joy in life. She then asks a rhetorical question: "Can anyone who has not escaped such captivity, who has felt the thrill and glory of freedom, be a pessimist?" This question emphasizes the idea that only by experiencing suffering and then breaking free from it, can one truly appreciate the feeling of joy. In the last sentence, Keller uses straightforward language to further her purpose by stating, "only by contact with evil could I have learned to feel by contrast the beauty of truth and love and goodness."

PART A: Which statement identifies the central idea of the text? Why it matters THAT TEENS ARE READING LESS
DanielleElmas [232]

Answer:

The missing options are:

A. The time that teenagers spend with digital media negatively impacts their ability to make sense of longer and more complex written material.

B. Teenagers are not developing the social skills they need to succeed in the world, as digital devices encourage them to spend time alone.

C. Fast-paced games and constantly updating social media makes it difficult for teenagers to be entertained by paper media, such as books and magazines.

D. The time that teenagers spend playing video games or on social media takes away from their commitment to their studies, negatively affecting their grades.

The answer is A

Explanation:

The central idea is that teenagers spend less time reading for pleasure, which includes reading books, magazines, or newspapers and more time on the internet or social media. As a consequence, they do not develop critical thinking skills, do not reflect enough on topics, do not comprehend long texts, and find it hard to read them.

The text mentions other changes during the years but insists that the one with the more negative impact is the decrease in reading for pleasure.

This impact was felt from the bottom up, and these contributions to
charle [14.2K]

Answer:

It is a compound-complex sentence

Explanation:

To answer this question we need to understand what the definitions are:

A simple sentence has just one independent clause or one complete thought. It has one subject, one verb, and modifiers.

A complex sentence has one independent clause (one subject, a verb, its modifiers, and a complete thought; this sentence can stand alone) and one dependent clause (it doesn't have a complete thought, it depends on the independent clause).

A compound sentence has two independent clauses, they can stand alone, both of them have a complete thought, and they are joined by coordinating conjunctions 'and', 'but', 'or'.

A complex-compound sentence has two independent clauses that can stand on their own without losing a complete thought, and one dependent clause (it can't stand alone; it depends on the independent clause).

So let's look at the given sentence:

This impact was felt from the bottom up, and these contributions to

American institutions may be the ones which most intimately affect the

lives of all Americans.

We can see that the first clause is independent - This impact was felt from the bottom up - it has a complete thought; it can stand alone.

The other clause is also independent - and these contributions to

American institutions may be the ones - it has a complete thought; it can stand alone; it is connected to the other clause with coordinating conjunction 'and'.

The last clause is the dependent clause - which most intimately affects the lives of all Americans - it can't stand alone; it doesn't have a complete thought. To be exact it is an adjective clause, it explains the noun 'contributions' or the pronoun 'one'.

So, we have two independent clauses and one dependent. It is a complex-compound sentence.

I hope it helped you :)
