What is the point of greatest emotional intensity in the story “An Episode of War” by Stephen Crane?

I only read the summary of this story but there are only two scenarios wherein the greatest emotional intensity can happen within the story.

These scenarios are:
The lieutenant returns home to his family 
The lieutenant's arm is amputated.

The lieutenant doesn't want his arm to be amputated. He did everything he could to save his arm. But to no avail, his arm was amputated. When he went home, his family was worried about his appearance because for them it signifies that a lot has changed in the soldier's life and there will be trials to face in the future.
