Code-switching occurs when a speaker alternates between languages in the context of a single conversation. The borrowing of words does not affect either language (as is the case with <em>pidgins</em> and <em>creoles</em>), because it only happens within individual sentences. Multilinguals sometimes use elements of different languages when speaking with each other, and these changes tend to be consistent with the syntax and phonology of each language.
