The territory of southern Levant included resent day Gaza, West bank and southern regions of Lebanon and Syria. It was earlier known as Canaan.
The Israelite settled in Canaan in about 1250.
When the drought affected Canaan, the Hebrews came to Egypt and begged for grain. Joseph ignored their past mistreatment of him and gave them food grain and asked them to stay in Egypt. The Hebrews stayed in Egypt and prospered.
