Formal research is usually done in an academic or professional setting like a physics institute or a university school of medicine

Informal research is done by individuals (like authors and inventors studying the background [“prior art”/“state of art”] of their respective areas of inquiry).

I haven’t read whatever book this is from, BUT here is my input.

The blue man means that it doesn’t matter how long Eddie has been dead. It’s like how long you’ve been asleep, you don’t remember it and it doesn’t ever feel as long as it actually was. The blue man means that time doesn’t matter in this instance.
