The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland that secrete its hormone directly in the blood and that acts on the tissue which is situated distantly from it. Thyroid contains two types of cell- follicular cells and parafollicular cells.  

Most f the thyroid tissue contains the follicular cell which is responsible for the secretion of the iodine-containing hormones like thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The parafollicular cells secrete a hormone called calcitonin. Calcitonin has a role in calcium regulation in blood.
