"The absolute value of an integer is its distance from zero on a number line. For example, the absolute value of -8 is +8, because -8 is 8 units from zero on the number line. Note that the absolute value of any positive or negative integer is positive." http://www.mathhelp.com/how_to/integers_and_the_number_line/opposites_and_absolute_value/

Opposite:
Just change the sign.
If it's a positive number, make it negative.
If it's a negative number, make it positive.

Absolute value:
Even easier.
Just throw away the sign, and you have it.

Solve 2x2 + 20x = −38.
cestrela7 [59]
2x^2+20x=-38 divide both sides by 2

x^2+10x=-19, halve the linear coefficient, square it, than add that value to both sides of the equation, in this case add (10/2)^2=25...

x^2+10x+25=6 now the left side is a perfect square

(x+5)^2=6 take the square root of both sides

x+5=±√6 subtract 5 from both sides

x=-5±√6    (so answer c.)

Evaluate: x(y – z) for x = 3, y = 9, and z = 2
O 33
O 45
O-21
O 21
ad-work [718]

Answer:

21

Step-by-step explanation:

Hi there!

We are given the expression x(y-z), and we want to evaluate it if x=3, y=9, and z=2

As we're given the values of the variables, we can substitute those values into the expression to find out what the value of the expression is.

So substitute 3 as x, 9 as y, and 2 as z in the expression above

x(y-z)

3(9-2)

Now we must follow the order of operations; start by subtracting 2 from 9 (do the stuff inside the parentheses first)

3(7)

Now multiply 3 and 7 together

21

Hope this helps!
