Authors of the Constitution wanted to avoid political parties because they worried that these factions would cause Americans to be divided. One of the biggest advocates of avoiding political parties was George Washington.

In Washington's farewell address, he warned American citizens that political parties play on peoples passions and emotions. Along with this, he mentioned how parties can lead to disunity and that the rhetoric of these parties overwhelm peoples ability to think logically.

This is why many authors were against the idea of political parties.

Montesquieu came up with separation of power - how did james madison use his theory to create our government structure
lys-0071 [83]
Madison understood that power can corrupt as seen with the kings of their time. So Madison set up the form of government that relies on separate branches of government that operates under checks and balances. This means that no one branch can get too powerful and overrule the other branches. We see this in modern government in the legislative, executive and judicial branches. Madison improved upon the idea that power cannot be held by one man or a few people.
