A sovereign government and an official language are two of the statements which are characteristics of a nation. However, there could be many official languages, but only one sovereign government and for there to be a state or polity, there needs to be one single, system of government, otherwise it is considered to be a failed state. An official language is a language that is given legal status in a particular country, state, or other jurisdiction.
