Voyages to the new world were often tough ordeals. Travelling to the new world was something that was viewed as something hard. Being a member of a crew, you had precise instructions on what your job was during a certain voyage. Furthermore, the food was distributed systematically, following a plan. This was done to ensure enough food was left when the journey was nearing the end. They often also had to bring different types of fruit in order to prevent vitamin deficiencies (scurvy being a prominent example which was happening at the time) .
