<span>The Greeks did not have sacred texts in the sense we Christians, Jews and Muslims do. There was nothing more pious than retelling tales of the gods and pious ancestors -- usually soldiers. Homer's epics are the oldest we have, however the accounts offered in the plays presented at the Festival of Dionysius, such as Sophocles, Euripides and so forth were considered as canonical although they often varied substantially in details. The Word of God depends on a belief in a transcendent deity. That's not what the Greeks believed in.</span>
