Country people face this problem as well, but it is far more acute in the cities, especially really large ones. It is estimated that 600,000,000 live in areas where water is not pure enough to drink.
Getting rid of bodily wastes is another huge problem. Eventually this will effect the health of the a community that lives in this kind of poverty.
Disease is another major problem. All sorts of diseases (tuberculosis, chronic fevers, diarrhea, and other child related diseases) can occur -- most of them fatal.
Even simple precautions like washing one's hands is a major defense that may not be available to those living in poverty.
