I have a square piece of cardboard that is 24 inches on each side. i want to cut out a square in each corner and the fold up the

sides to make an open box. how big should i make the squares that i cut out in order to make the box have the greatest volume?

A square of side 4 inch must be cut in order to get greatest volume.

after cutting a square of side x inch and folding it into a box, the length of each side of the box's base is (24-2x) inch and box's height is x inch.
∴volume, V= (24-2x)² × x
differentiate V with respect to x and put dV/dx = 0
we get x =12 and x= 4
x=12 is not possible so maximum volume is obtained when x=4 inch.

Wayne and Winston are scuba diving and are ascending to the surface. The function y = 30x − 105 represents Wayne’s elevation in
arsen [322]
The function that represents Wayne´s elevation:
y = 30 x - 105
The function that represents Winston´s elevation:
- 100 = 0 m + b
b = -100
-16 = 3m - 100
3 m = 84
m = 84 : 3 = 28
y = 28 x - 100
Surface level: y = 0
Wayne:
0 = 30 x - 105
x = 3.5 minutes
Winston:
0 = 28 x - 100
x = 3.57 minutes
If they both ascend at the same rate, Wayne will be first to the surface.

What are the coordinates of the point on the directed line segment from (-10, -2) (10,−10) that partitions the segment into a ra
sveta [45]

Answer:

The answer to your question is (-5/2, -5)

Step-by-step explanation:

Data

A (-10, -2)

B (10, -10)

ratio 3/5

Formula

X = (x₁ + rx₂)/(1 + r)

Y = (y₁ + ry₂)/(1 + r)

Process

1.- Calculate X

x₁ = -10     x₂ = 10

X = (-10 + 3/5(10))/ (1 + 3/5)

X = (-10 + 30/5) / 8/5

X = -4/8/5

X = -5/2

2.- Calculate Y

y₁ = -2           y₂ = -10

Y = (-2 + (3/5)(-10))/(1 + 3/5)

Y = (-2 - 30/5) / 8/5

Y = -8/8/5

Y = -5

3.- The coordinates of the point are (-5/2, -5)

Consider the line 2x-7y=-7. Find the equation of the line that is perpendicular to this line and passes through the point (-8,-6
monitta

Step-by-step explanation:

2x - 7y = -7

2x + 7 = 7y

y = (2/7)x + 1

the slope of the line is the factor of x : 2/7

FYI that is the ratio y/x and means, when x changes by 7 points to the plus (right) side, then y changes 2 points to the plus (up) side.

the parallel line will have the same slope, of course. just a different y-axis-interception point. that means, the "+" term at the end changes. changes to what ?

well, we use the given point coordinates

-6 = (2/7)×-8 + c

-6 = -16/7 + c

-42/7 = -16/7 + c

-26/7 = c

so, the equation of the parallel line is

y = (2/7)x - 26/7

y = (2/7)×(x - 13)

the perpendicular line is a line that intercepts our original line with a 90 degree angle.

that means its slope will switch x and y of the original line slope and also flips the sign (from + to - or vice versa).

=> the slope of the perpendicular line is -7/2.

the line equation looks like

y = (-7/2)x + c

and again, we use the given point coordinates to find the missing c (y-intercept).

-6 = (-7/2)×-8 + c

-6 = -7×-4 +c

-6 = 28 + c

-34 = c

so, the full equation of the perpendicular line is

y = (-7/2)x - 34
