Scout's teacher, Miss Caroline, gets mad at Scout because unlike the rest of her classmates, she knows how to read and write! Miss Caroline dislikes this because she is from a totally different town, so she knows nobody! She also wants everyone to treat her as the teacher, she wants complete control of the classroom, and she wants to be the only person to teach. She tells Scout not to let her father teach her again, but Scout pays no mind to her.

Wiesel describes Yossi and himself as smiling, laughing, and happy. He describes those were selected as standing apart, abandoned by the whole world. Silently weeping. He cannot truly be happy when he sees his fellow prisoners have been doomed. The contrast also reminds the reader that there is a fine line between death and survival.
