It functions to protect the cell from the surroundings and also controls the materials entering in or leaving out of the cell. The red blood cells (erythrocytes) are cells of the blood that carry oxygen to be distributed to all the body tissues. The cell membrane of the red blood cells like many other body cells contain very few sodium channels.
