Leonard Mead "The Pedestrian" is unique in his society for walking every evening by himself, a tradition he has had every evening. He is the only walker in the society. Meads' behavior is seen to be threatening by the powers in charge who believe that his determination of walking at night could upset the social stability.
His house lacks a viewing screen which is expected o the members of his society.
He is ostracized for being different to the rest of the society i.e., He is arrested by the automated police car which is an instrument of the government powers in control. It disproves his behavior, which the entire society does as well. His lit house further symbolizes his difference from the rest of the society.
In this world, there is no room for human discretion and judgment as the world is fully automated. The viewing screen is a distraction to the family to keep them under a watchful eye of the government. It is easier for the government to control a public that is stationed in front of its Tv set than a roaming public that is walking.
