Like many Republicans of the time, Nixon felt that the US federal government was too involved in the life of everyday Americans. Nixon blamed liberal policies like the New Deal and the Great Society programs for people's reliance on the federal government for economic and social support.

This is why Nixon favored New Federalism. In this system, state and local governments would decide how to best use federal funds to solve social and economic issues within their cities and states.
