If you wish to show people what the machine looks like on the inside, you will need to draw a sectional view of it. It's as if you are drawing the machine with part of it cut open, as if a section of it has been removed.

Another example I could give you is when Medicine and Biology students study anatomy. Since they need to see what bodies look like on the inside, they often work with sectional view drawings of body parts.
