John Paul Jones's victory over the British ship “Serapis” was a major victory at a crucial time. It significantly raised sailors morale and inspired the American forces to continue the fight. In 1779 he took command of the Bonhomme Richard. In September he intercepted the Baltic merchant fleet under convoy of the British ships Serapis and Countess of Scarborough.

Explanation:

When the American Revolution broke out, Jones sided with the colonists and joined the Continental Navy, with his greatest victory coming from his against-all-odds defeat of the British warship Serapis in 1779.
