I think the answer is that it shows the readers that she is insecure, cares what people think, doesn't like herself, but thinks that she is good at everything. Hope this helped!

The narrative voice here is telling us, readers that Squeaky, though satisfied with who she is, still would like to be different in order to please others .She seems to care a lot about what her parents think of her and the point the narrator is trying to make is that Sqeaky thinks her parents would like her to be the same as other girls who go to school with her.
