Describe, in your own words, the interaction between dante and the lady who comes to visit him in canto ii. who is this lady? wh
forsale [732]

Dante is standing at the mouth of hell with Virgil and he feels a great sense of dread and apprehension about continuing. Virgil then tells him that a women told him to find Dante and be his guide in hell, this lady was Beatrice. She came down from Heaven to tell Virgil of Dante's story and ask him to help Dante. Beatrice was Dante's true love (in real life and in the story) who died and is now counted among the blessed in Heaven. She had learned of Dante's plight from St. Lucia, also in Heaven, who in turn heard about the poor poet from the Virgin Mary. Beatrice symbolizes divine love and is sent by Mary and Lucia to help Dante by enlisting Virgil's help. Beatrice also knows that Dante will listen to Virgil if he knows that she has intervened and still loves him and that he is being watched over.

How does the rural setting affect what can and does happen in this story?
DanielleElmas [232]
There are several correct options here:
- the schoolhouse is one room
- all children grades 1 through 8 study together
- many of the children must help with seasonal farm work

In rural areas, these things happen quite often. Usually, there is no particular building allocated for a school, which is why often 'the school' is just a single small room where all kids go to study together. Given that there aren't many children in such rural areas, all of them are cramped into one single room which serves as school where all of them, regardless of their age, are taught together. Finally, they usually have to do very difficult manual labor to help their family out, which is why they don't have much time to study and dedicate to do their homework.

What are some phrases in the poem "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe and their meaning?
Alex787 [66]

Answer: Phrases such as <em>"midnight dreary"</em>, <em>"bleak December"</em>, "<em>nothing more",</em><em> </em><em>"nevermore" </em>cast a dark shadow on the plot, and build the melancholic atmosphere.

Explanation:

<em>"The Raven"</em> is Edgar Allan Poe's poem, in which the narrator, mourning after his lover's death, is visited by a rather strange guest - the speaking raven.

In the poem, Poe uses various words and phrases, many of which are repeated multiple times throughout the poem. For instance, the word <em>"nevermore"</em>, the only word that the raven utters, is an answer to all the questions that the narrator asks. This word <em>contributes to the dark and melancholic atmosphere in the poem</em> - winter (December), darkness, middle of the night, the narrator who is all alone in his "chamber"... This setting is established at the very beginning of the poem, by the use of phrases such as <em>"midnight dreary"</em>, <em>"bleak December"</em>, etc. Moreover, Poe's repetition of the phrase <em>"nothing more"</em> as in <em>"Only this and nothing more,” "This it is and nothing more,” "Darkness there and nothing more"</em>, makes the atmosphere even more frightening. The author is assuring himself that there is "nothing", or, in other words, that he is imagining the sounds that he hears. However, even before the raven appears, we somehow know that there is something behind the chamber door.
