Lyndon Johnson (1908 – 1973) was the 36th President of the United States, and he was in office between 1963 and 1969. Through his policies, he was responsible for increasing the involvement of the US in the Vietnam war. For example, by using the the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, in 1964, Johnson obtained authorization to use the regular military force in Southeast Asia.

As a consequence, a large number of Americans (mostly military specialists) ended up working and risking their lives in Vietnamese soil. The peace process that totally stagnated there and the American casualties started to accumulate. This situation boosted the emergence of an anti-war movement, also because the US society was totally disconnected of the ongoing conflict, and everyone feared for the lives of soldiers and of the young draft-age citizens.
