Art produced during the time the Catholic Church reformed and revitalized in opposition to the protestant reformation is called Baroque. It preceded the Rococo and followed the Renaissance style. This art flourished in Europe from earty seventeenth century and was encouraged by the Catholic Church seeking to counter the simplicity and austerity of Protestant art, music and architecture. The baroque is an ornate and extravagant style of painting, sculpture, architecture, music and the like.
