Humor is all over the movie. Especially when the one guy says "inconceivable" to everything. The suspense is definitely not knowing who the guy is in all black until he takes off the mask.
I think Jonathan uses it because everything puzzles him but not God. He states that God is the only one you understand everything in the world and could explain the true meaning of life and every events. I hope you are satisfied with my answer and feel free to ask for more
